Race Course

The event will start at the famous Tara Wildlife, just north of Vicksburg and finish at Vicksburg Front in downtown Vicksburg, Mississippi. The race course follows the Mississippi River downstream to the confluence of the Yazoo River, River Left at Mile 337. Enter the Yazoo for the final one-mile upstream finish at Vicksburg Front. Navigation of the course will require three crossings of the river. Making the crossings will keep you in the current.

Getting Ready at Dawn

Average Weather Conditions
(Current NWS Forecast & Conditions)

Daytime highs will be around 75 degrees. Nighttime lows will be around 55 degrees. The average water temperature is 57 degrees. The reading on the Vicksburg Gage will be around 35 ft. At 35 feet, average flow is 1,500,000 cubic feet of water rolling by Vicksburg per second. In most locations, the river will be over a mile wide.

The course will be very fast. The speed demons of the group will paddle the distance in 2 to 2 ½ hours.  Us mortals will paddle the distance in 3 ½ to 4 hours.

Alternate Plan & Safety

We will race rain or shine. If the wind is sustained at 15 miles per hour at race time on the Mississippi River, we will race a very challenging alternate 10-mile up and back course on the Yazoo River. This course starts and ends at Vicksburg Front. We will not race either course in thunder storms or heavy fog.

Good Start.  22 Miles To Go!

Barge traffic will not be stopped along the race course. The U. S. Coast Guard has issued the BluzCruz Committee a Marine Event Permit and will post a Notice to Mariners alerting all towing companies about the race as well as broadcast a radio message to all tows several times the day of the race. The Yazoo River leg of the race is a no-wake zone for all marine traffic. BluzCruz volunteers will operate multiple motorized safety boats along the course to help insure the safety for all racers.

The Race Committee will do everything possible to paddle the Mississippi River but we will not put you in the largest river in North America if we feel your safety is compromised by weather conditions. With that said, be prepared for changing conditions after the race has started. The Race Committee does not recommend this race for first-time paddlers.
